Dr. Georgia Irby of William & Mary will speak on "Constructing the Orbis Terrarum in Narrative Maps:  Cartography is a Personal Thing."  Her talk is co-sponsored by the Classics Department and the Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Classics Conference.

Dr. Georgia Irby received her MA in Latin from the University of Georgia and her Ph.D. in Classical Philology from the University of Boulder. She is currently an Associate Professor of Classical Studies at the College of William and Mary. There she teaches a wide range of topics including Latin and Greek, ancient civilizations, mythology, religion, and ancient Greek and Roman science and cartography.

Some of Irby's publications include A Little Latin Reader with Mary English; Military Religion in Roman Britain; Blackwell Companion to Ancient Science, Medicine and Technology; and Encyclopedia of Ancient Natural Scientists: The Greek Tradition and Its Many Heirs with Paul Keyser.

Dr. Irby is also a member of the all-volunteer sail crew at Jamestown, Virginia, where she helps maintain and sail three replica square-rigged ships.
