The International Context of the Greek World in the 19th Century: Klassiki Anthodesmi, a "Classical Bouquet"

Classics Saturday, April 2, 2016 10:00 am - 3:30 pm Marie Mount Hall, 1400

A unique and beautiful volume, Klassiki Anthodesmi, or "Classical Bouquet," was created by Ms. Elisabeth Contaxaki of Crete for the fine art exhibit at the Exposition Universelle of 1855, the first world's fair to be held in Paris. It pairs paintings of classical Greek sites with dried flowers collected at the sites and quotations of poetry in ancient Greek, French, and English.

The volume was the focus of a one-day conference organized by Dr. Lillian Doherty and Dr. Polyvia Parara of the Classics Department and Dr. Alexander Nagel of the Smithsonian Institution, where the Klassiki Anthodesmi is currently preserved. By special permission of the Smithsonian, the volume itself was displayed, and students of Classics and Modern Greek joined the organizers in presenting papers on the artist, the world's fair, the Greek sites as they then appeared, and the ideals and values they represented in the context of nineteenth-century Greece, France, and the United States.

The conference was supported by a generous grant from the College of Arts and Humanities.
