Professor Mortimer Sellers delivered his NIAF Pellegri Distinguished Lecture, entitled "America: The New Rome" on April 21st, 2016 in the Ulrich Recital Hall.

Mortimer Sellers is Regents Professor of the University System of Maryland, Director of the University of Baltimore Center for International and Comparative Law, and President of the International Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy. He writes and teaches about constitutionalism, liberty, and the reception of Roman and Italian ideas into American political philosophy and culture.

Prof. Sellers' books on these topics include "Republican Legal Theory" (2003), "The Sacred Fire of Liberty" (1998), and "American Republicanism: Roman Ideology in the United States Constitution" (1994). He is (with David Gerber) editor of the Cambridge University Press book series "ASCL Studies in Comparative Law" and (with Mark Agrast) editor of the series "ASIL Studies in Comparative Law".

Prof. Sellers received his A.B. and J.D. degrees from Harvard University and his B.C.L. and D.Phil. degrees from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar and Frank Knox Fellow. He has served as a visiting scholar at Cambridge University, Georgetown University Law Center, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and the Academy of International Law in the Hague.
