"Un-Athenian Affairs: I.F. Stone, M.I. Finley, and the Trial of Socrates"

Classics | College of Arts and Humanities | Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies Thursday, September 11, 2014 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Please come to a lecture by Dr. Thai Jones on the friendship between Moses Finley and I.F. Stone and their contrasting views of the trial of Socrates.  Lunch will be served!  If you plan to have lunch with us, please RSVP to Prof. Judith Hallett, jeph@umd.edu.

Thai Jones is the Herbert H. Lehman Curator for U.S. History at Columbia University's Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Although his main research focuses on radicalism in the twentieth century, he has a longstanding interest in the connections between the United States and the classical world. As an assistant professor at the Bard College Master of Arts in Teaching Program he created a course entitled "Democrats and Republicans," which examined the linkages uniting popular politics in the Ancient World with the era of the American Revolution. His chapter, "Un-Athenian Affairs: I.F. Stone, M.I. Finley, and the Trial of Socrates," appeared in Moses Finley and Politics (Brill, 2013). Jones is the author of two books: More Powerful Than Dynamite: Radicals, Plutocrats, Progressives, and New York's Year of Anarchy (Bloomsbury, 2014 [Walker, 2012]), and A Radical Line: From the Labor Movement to the Weather Underground, One Family's Century of Conscience (Free Press, 2004). Jones is working on a new book on the labor movement and the environment in a Nevada boomtown. Tentatively entitled, Goldfield: Dreams, Greed, Destruction, and the Fall of the Old West, it is under contract with Harvard University Press.
