Carpe Saturni diem! Saturday Pedagogy Workshops at the University of Maryland, College Park

Current and prospective Latin teachers are welcome to join us this spring semester for one or more Saturday workshops on Latin pedagogy!

Current and prospective Latin teachers are welcome to join us this spring semester for one or more Saturday workshops on Latin pedagogy! In accordance with its overall theme of Latin in the context of world language pedagogy, this course includes a colloquium on teaching Latin and other world languages at the K-16 level, along with a mentoring project that involves “shadowing” two current Latin teachers and observing at least one of these teachers in the classroom. Additionally, there will be an essay contest on Thornton Wilder’s The Ides of March for students in AP Latin (Caesar/Vergil); interested participants are advised to contact Professor Hallett at jeph@umd.edu for further details.

The entire series may be taken as a semester course (LATN488P or 640), or you may register for one or more of the day-long Saturday workshops, each featuring distinguished guest faculty members who will focus on important issues in the teaching of Latin at the K-12 level and beyond. The learning outcomes for this course are ambitious and varied. We hope that participants will gain both concrete knowledge and intellectual insights to help expand their teaching repertoire and increase their store of pedagogical information relevant to diverse students in Latin classrooms today. The interactive nature of these workshops—and the unique opportunity to experience a variety of teaching perspectives from authorities in the field—will allow participants to learn from each other as well as from our esteemed guest presenters.

Each session will take place in the Linguistics Department Seminar Room (MMH) from 9AM-3:30PM. Scheduled Saturday sessions are January 30th; February 6th, 13th, and 27th; March 5th; and April 9th & 30th. We look forward to seeing you there!

For more information on this course and how to apply, please contact Dr. Judith P. Hallett (jeph@umd.edu) or Dr. Eric Adler (eadler@umd.edu).
