Student Presents In Ny

Erik Shell presented his “Athens Minecraft Project” at the Digital Classics Association conference.

On April 5, 2013, classics major Erik Shell gave a presentation on his “Athens Minecraft Project” at a conference of the Digital Classics Association at the University at Buffalo, New York titled, “Word, Space, Time: Digital Perspectives on the Classical World.”

Shell demonstrated how he is using the videogame “Minecraft” to build an interactive virtual model of the city of Athens in antiquity. The model can be used in classes to bring the city to life.

“The ‘Athens Minecraft Project’ gives students and professors a first-person look at the ancient city for the first time,” Shell said. “The simplicity of the game offers ease of use for professors of all technological backgrounds while still showcasing the ancient world the way it was within one meter of standard error.”
