Undergraduate William Soergel receives LGBT Equity Scholarship

The university's LGBT Equity Center has awarded Classics senior William Soergel the 2016 LGBT Equity Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to full-time students at the university who have “demonstrated a commitment to promoting civil rights for and preventing discrimination against LGBT people.”

As a student, Soergel leads the Bisexuals at Maryland (BAM) support and discussion group for bisexual students at the University of Maryland, College Park. His undergraduate academic work in Classics, as well, has discussed the role of sexuality in Plautus’ Pseudolus and Petronius’ Satyrica under the direction of Professors Judith P. Hallett and Gregory S. Staley, respectively. He will use part of the funds from the scholarship to apply to graduate schools in ancient history this fall.
