"Modeling the Past: The Telephos Frieze from the Great Altar of Pergamon and the Construction of Identity"

Art History and Archaeology | Classics Wednesday, May 6, 2015 1:30 pm - 2:45 pm Michelle Smith Collaboratory for Visual Culture

Using a 3-D model of the inner court of the Great Altar of Pergamon created by undergraduate Classics major Erik Shell, Professor Jorge Bravo III will discuss how the sculpted Telephos Frieze casts the origins of Pergamon in a traditional narrative form that represents the Attalid capital city as a traditional Greek colony, thereby promoting the city's Greek identity while subtly acknowledging the true mixed nature of its population.  Erik Shell will introduce the model and discuss the process of building it before the talk.
