ETA SIGMA PHI
Eta Sigma Phi is the national Classics honor society, founded nearly 100 years ago in Illinois. Our campus chapter, Zeta Nu, was formed in 1994 and inducts new members at a ceremony in March of each year. Membership is by invitation and based on excellent academic achievement in our language classes.
To qualify, a student need not be a Classics major but must have completed a 300- or 400-level Latin or ancient Greek course at UMD. (Students who have completed a 200-level Latin or ancient Greek course may be invited to join if they are registered for the 300 or 400 level.) The student’s average in the language courses must be a B+ or higher, and the overall GPA must be a B or higher.
In addition to active (undergraduate) members, there are associate (graduate student) members and honorary members. The latter are not degree candidates, but they have excelled in the study of the ancient languages and/or have contributed to the understanding and appreciation of classical culture.
Founded in fall of 2011, the Classics Club is an officially recognized student organization at the College Park campus. It welcomes any student interested in the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome and in recent adaptations of classical art and literature.
