First NIAF Pellegri Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Caroline Winterer
First NIAF Pellegri Distinguished Lecture by Dr. Caroline Winterer
We are very pleased to inaugurate the NIAF Pellegri Distinguished Lecture Series, made possible by a grant from the National Italian American Foundation, with a talk by Dr. Caroline Winterer of Stanford University. Her talk is entitled, "Are We Rome or Greece? America's Infatuation with Classical Antiquity." It will be followed by a reception in the foyer of Ulrich Recital Hall.
Is the United States an aggressive empire or a peaceful republic? Do we primarily model ourselves after ancient Rome or ancient Greece? Those are questions Americans have asked themselves since the founding of the United States, according to Professor Winterer. Her talk will explore why Americans since the founding era have found the ancient world to be relevant to modern questions, and why they continue to do so today, especially in the wake of 9/11.
Caroline Winterer is director of the Stanford Humanities Center and Anthony P. Meier Family Professor in the Humanities. She is also Professor of History and, by courtesy, Professor of Classics, at Stanford University.
