The Department wishes to congratulate Erik Shell, a Greek and Latin major, who has been awarded a Maryland Summer Scholars Grant for summer 2014.  The grant supports students in the summer as they work on original research projects under the mentorship of at least one faculty member.

Erik, working under the mentorship of Dr. Judith Hallett and Dr. Lee Pearcy, will be researching how ingredients for medical remedies are used in the Hippocratic Corpus, with particular interest in the question whether the choice or use of those ingredients hints at a systematized medical tradition or some other unexplored aspect of ancient medicine.  The results of his research will form the basis of a thesis he plans to write in the coming year.
