Genevieve Menthen, a junior majoring in Classics, represented the department at the 2021 ARHU Service Awards.

Genevieve Menthen represented the Department of Classics, as an award recipient, during the 2021 ARHU Service Awards. Menthen is a junior, studying to receive her B.A. in Classics and Criminal Justice.

Menthen, in the face of last year’s immense change and adversity, has “excelled in what has essentially become an entirely different job than the one she applied to,” said Joseph Filteau, coordinator in the College of Arts and Humanities Office of Student Affairs & Career Engagement.

Prior to the pandemic, Menthen hoped to be an ARHU orientation advisor in the Office of Student Affairs & Career Engagement; however, COVID-19 altered her plans. Instead of giving up her advising role in the face of unprecedented events, she remained committed. In fact, having to connect with students remotely sparked an even greater enthusiasm in Menthen. Menthen emphasized how she was not alone in adapting to the abrupt changes and expressed the importance of collaboration among her co-advisors and students. “In these uncertain times,” she said, “all we can do is our best. We're all in this together!”

Menthen’s enthusiasm and creativity with new students made her a perfect advocate for ARHU. She stressed the role that her undergraduate education has played in providing her with a diverse skill set.  She made sure to emphasize to students the transferrable skills she has accumulated between her two majors and to show students how she plans to use those skills to secure a career after graduation.

Menthen continues to be a committed member to the ARHU community and expressed excitement in representing the department of Classics as an award recipient,

“I am completely honored to receive this award and continue my service to the College of Arts and Humanities,” she said.
