"Pompeii: Life and Art" - Summer 2021 Virtual Study Abroad Course

We are excited to announce that we are offering a new virtual study abroad course about Pompeii! The instructor, Professor Crispin Corrado, holds a Ph.D. from Brown University. She has taught popular study abroad courses for the University of Maryland since 2016. Since she lives in Italy, this course will include video lectures made on-site in the houses and streets of Pompeii!

"Pompeii: Life and Art" will investigate the life and art of Pompeii and other Vesuvian sites such as at Oplontis, Stabiae, and Herculaneum. The ancient city and its surrounding areas were buried in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79, which preserved several towns, structures, and artwork for thousands of years. The course will analyze the history, architecture, artwork, social issues, and daily life in ancient Rome. Students will discuss archaeological remains such as sculptures and wall paintings, and explore how Roman art and architecture influenced the art of later periods.
