Maryland Classics Students in Greece!

Current M.A. student Rob Santucci and M.A. graduate Emily Mohr are participating in summer programs in Greece.

Current M.A. student Rob Santucci and recent M.A. graduate Emily Mohr met in Athens while participating in different summer programs.  Rob took part in a drama workshop and Emily is a volunteer with the excavations in the Athenian Agora, sponsored by the American School of Classical Studies in Athens.

Rob writes:

"I was fortunate enough to participate in ARCnet's 3rd Annual Ancient Greek Drama School. The course, which took place in Lavrio and Epidauros, focused on modern reception of ancient drama. Professors and stage directors from a number of countries gave lectures highlighting contemporary productions of ancient plays, with topics ranging from the timeliness of Aristophanes' Peace in Israel to the comparative underrepresentation of Euripides on the Czech stage. I had the chance to participate in interactive workshops focusing on the role of the chorus in ancient drama, as well, using the choruses in Oedipus at Colonus and The Birds, among others, as examples. These workshops gave me a newfound appreciation for this unique dramatic institution, especially after an exercise that required me to move my feet, arms and head like a member of the titular chorus of The Birds! The program proved to be an excellent experience, and I am grateful to the Department of Classics for supporting my travel efforts."

(ARCnet is the acronym of the European Network of Research and Documentation of Performances of Ancient Greek Drama.)
