New approaches to teaching Homer’s Odyssey for today’s classroom.
The Modern Language Association has just published Approaches to Teaching Homer’s Odyssey, edited by Professor Emerita Lillian Doherty. The volume is part of the MLA series Approaches to Teaching World Literature and contains sixteen essays by different contributors, plus a general introduction and overviews of the available textbooks and contemporary criticism by Professor Doherty. The contributors teach a wide variety of courses in settings that range from ninth grade to graduate school. Some of the topics covered include “The Odyssey and Epic Tradition,” “The Material Culture of Epic,” “Reading the Odyssey after the Iliad,” “Odysseus, Masculinity, and the Paradox of Domesticity,” and “The Odyssey Project: Teaching the Odyssey to Incarcerated Students.” A section on reception includes essays on Dante, modern lyric poetry, and pop culture.
