In the News: Alumni at the 2026 AIA/SCS Meeting

Alumni from the Departments of Classics, Anthropology, and Art History present at meeting in San Francisco
The Department of Classics is proud to report that in January 2026, four of our alumni presented papers at the joint annual meeting of the Society for Classical Studies (SCS) and the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) in San Francisco, California.
Jonathan Clark, B.A. 2018, Ph.D. candidate at the University of Washington, spoke on "A Queer Galatea? Garcilaso de la Vega's use of Vergil's Second Eclogue."
Mary Catherine Contreras, M.A. 2024, who will begin her studies for the Ph.D. next fall at Catholic University of America, presented a paper entitled, "Conditionally Unconditional: Marcus, Fronto and Care Ethics."
Emily Mohr, M.A. 2015, Ph.D. candidate at Duke University, spoke on, "Between a Rock and a Hard Place: The Fungibility of 'Tanagra' Figurines."
Robert Santucci, M.A. 2016, Ph.D. Michigan 2023, Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, presented on "Meaty Muraenae; or Chef Vedius' Special."
Also on the AIA program were the following alumni from Art History and Anthropology.
Amanda K. Chen, a Ph.D. graduate of the UMD Art History program, now an Assistant Professor in the Kansas City Art Institute, who works on Roman art and archaeology.
Stefan Woehlke, a Ph.D. graduate of the UMD Anthropology department, an archaeologist currently working in the UMD Historical Preservation Program.
