Prof. Maryl Gensheimer Named Trustee of AIA as Her Article Proposing New Understanding of Pantheon Published
February 21, 2026
Prof. Gensheimer's rethinking of circumstances of Pantheon's construction should spark an "inevitable debate" to which she looks forward
At their annual meeting in January, members of the American Institute of Archaeology (AIA) elected Professor Maryl Gensheimer to a three-year term as Academic Trustee of the Governing Board of the AIA. She "was honored to be recognized by my colleagues and to be elected to this three-year term of service to our central governance."
As well, Dr. Gensheimer's article on the Pantheon, "The Pantheon and the Propylaia: Architecture and Statecraft in Hadrianic Rome," was published in the annual edition of The Journal of Ancient Architecture. Her careful arguments and analysis suggests an understanding of the circumstances of the construction of the Pantheon and its intended meaning that challenges a long-standing interpretation of the Pantheon first proposed in 1983 and that has "become very much the received view." Dr. Gensheimer anticipates that her "counter-argument will land as something of a surprise to many" and she looks forward "to the inevitable debate that will ensue as [the article] begins to circulate in my field."
Double congratulations Dr. Gensheimer!
